Training of Farmers to Strengthen Cocoa and Coffee Farmers Organizations in Central Sulawesi Province

2024-08-27

Training of Farmers (ToF) in Strengthening Farmer Organization, a strategic initiative by GIZ SASCI+ Sustainable and Value-Added Agriculture Supply Chain, was designed to strengthen the institutional capacity of cocoa and coffee farmer groups in Sigi and Poso, Central Sulawesi. The impactful training, facilitated by RIWANI Globe in collaboration with local trainers and private partners such as OFI, JB Cacao, and local government to provide farmers with practical skills and knowledge essential for the sustainable and effective management of their groups. The trainers themselves were graduates of previous Training of Trainers (ToT) programmes, providing additional insights into group organization.
From July to September 2024, 20 batches of ToF sessions were successfully implemented, with the main objective of empowering farmers to strengthen the capacity and governance of their farmer groups. The programme made a real difference, not only by improving farmers’ management skills but also by revitalising dormant farmer groups and improving overall administrative and financial practices. The training exceeded expectations, reaching 529 cocoa and coffee farmers—far exceeding the initial target of 500. Participants ranged in age from 18 to 82 and had a diverse educational background, from primary school to tertiary education. ToF was attended by 46% of female farmers.
The ToF program demonstrated strong impacts from locally tailored training, helping farmer groups in Sigi and Poso build resilience and develop strong organizational and financial practices for a sustainable future. In addition, the program successfully raised awareness and strengthened the commitment of female farmer groups to develop their businesses sustainably.
